In 2003 Ryan took a short break from university to shoot his first documentary. Four years later the film, which followed a speed boating team’s disastrous attempt to break the world circumnavigation record, was finally complete. The same could not be said for his tertiary education. Thus began a love affair with cameras and storytelling.
Ryan's projects have taken him to every continent on the globe, except Antarctica, which weighs heavily on his mind. His background in documentary has developed a keen eye for character and story whilst his experience operating the camera has evolved a strong visual aesthetic and understanding of composition and lighting.
He’s gone on to shoot multiple spots for Red Bull, Peugeot, Lexus, Burger King, Holden and Air New Zealand. Recent credits include spots for Ford & Opel.
This year, Ryan has directed a suite of films for Honda through Digitas LBi. Each film focuses on a different Honda model (CR-V, HR-V, Civic and Jazz) but all provide a ‘Real View Test Drive’ experience – offering potential Honda buyers a unique, immersive experience of the Honda vehicle of their choice.
